This year marked the 20th anniversary of the final flight of the last jet airliner created in the United Kingdom. BAE Systems had announced the termination of the programme in November 2001, bringing an end to jet airliner development in the country. The RJX was the last iteration of the BAe 146 family, Britain’s most successful jet airliner programme, in terms of numbers built. Another era also passed two decades ago this November, when Concorde G-BOAF touched down at Filton, the last ever flight by a commercial supersonic transport (to date). Of all the jet airliners built in Britain since 1950, Concorde is by far the most famous. It was also the one produced in the smallest numbers; only ten were built at Filton outside Bristol, matching the number that emerged from the French assembly line at Toulouse.
The only British ‘airliner’ still in production is the slowest of all the designs covered in this volume. It carries the least number of passengers and is the only one powered by piston engines. It is also the most numerous of all the post-1950 designs. Often overlooked, the Islander is a true aerial workhorse. The subject of this volume is the airliners designed and first flown in the United Kingdom since 1950.
